This is a winter root vegetable known as Koorka in Malayalam, Siru Kizhangu in Tamil,Sambrani Gadde in Kannada, Cheemadumpa in Telugu and Chinese potato in English.

It has a dense texture with a muddy outer skin - it looks similar to a small colocassia. Make sure to wash well before cooking.

Tip : Before you could wash it, put it inside a cloth hold it tight and pat it on the kitchen platform for about couple of times followed by washing thoroughly cutting and getting it ready for cooking.

Koorka fry is a kerala delicacy. Also popularly used in Avials and Sambar. In Kochi and surrounding areas Koorka is cooked with pork known as Koorka irachi or Pork Koorka Ularthiyathu.
