Traditional Indian greens- Manathakalli or kaasi soppu (Part 4)

For those who dont know it, manathakkali plants are small and measure 3 feet tall. Its commonly called black night shade in English, and found in India and Africa.

- Rich in calcium, iron, phosphorus and vitamin C
- Helps stabilize blood sugar levels
- Treats ulcers, seizures and stomach burn
With so many benefits associated with manathakkali keerai, including it in your diet can help in many ways. Here is a simple kootu recipe made using the leaves.
- Wash ¼ cup yellow moong dhall and soak in a pressure cooker with 1 and half cup water. Clean, wash and chop the leaves, flowers and fruits of one bunch manathakkali keerai. Add to the moong dhall.
- Cut 1 green chilli, 1 small tomato, 3 cloves garlic and 7 to 8 sambhar onions and add to the cooker. Add ¼ tsp. Turmeric powder and pressure cook with whistle for 5 minutes.
- Add salt after its cooked and temper with ½ teaspoon urad dhall, mustard seeds and cumin seeds each, 2 dry red chillies and 2 pinches asafoetida. Stir and the manathakalli kootu is ready to serve with hot white rice or chapathi.
