Find out why we use Marigold flowers at our Organic Farms

During my recent visit to one of our organic farms where we grow tomatoes, I couldn’t help but notice the beautiful marigold and chrysanthemum flowers growing alongside the crops. I thought I’d share why we plant these flowers – they play a pretty important role in protecting our crops naturally!

As it turns out, these flowers are nature’s pest repellents! Marigolds and chrysanthemums help keep harmful insects at bay without the need for chemicals.

Here’s how they work and how you can use them too:

Marigold:

Natural Pest Fighter: Marigolds are great at repelling pests like nematodes, aphids, and mosquitoes. They release a chemical called thiophene, which is toxic to soil-dwelling pests.

How to Use: You can plant marigolds between your crops like tomatoes, beans, and broccoli, or even create a border around your garden for extra protection. Some farmers use marigolds as a cover crop to prepare the soil for future plantings.

Chrysanthemum:

Built-in Insecticide: Chrysanthemums contain pyrethrum, a natural insecticide that’s effective against ants, mites, aphids, and many other pests.

How to Use: Plant them between rows of crops like lettuce and cabbage, or near crops like corn and squash. You can even dry the flowers to make a natural spray for pests.

By using these flowers, we’re able to protect our crops in a more sustainable and eco-friendly way – and it’s something you can try in your own garden, too!
