Carnation, also called grenadine, or clove pink, (Dianthus caryophyllus), herbaceous plant of the pink, or carnation, family (Caryophyllaceae), native to the Mediterranean area. It is widely grown for its fringe-petaled flowers, which often have a spicy fragrance.
